Description:
A different form of Apatura iris
(Purple Emperor), that can develop when the pupae are exposed to low temperatures.
Sometimes this blue irradiation is evenly distributed over his wings, sometimes it is not
visible, as if vanished in a monotonous dark-brown background with white spots. Only the
males have this texture colors. Like the Lesser Purple Emperor this
butterfly lives in woodlands and tracks with black poplars or tremble poplars. The males
can often be found in sunlit clearings, sucking on carnivore excrements. They are also
attracted by human perspiration and by strong-smelling cheese.
Flight period:
One brood from June to August.
Larval host plants:
Tremble poplars and Black poplars.
